Who Are Those Men And What Are They Doing

1970 and Vietnam is now behind me, Norma, Michelle and I found an old farm house in the country. This was not Norma's first choice, but it was one we could afford. It was only 2 miles to the paved road and it does not rain much on the high planes of Texas, so getting in and out was seldom a problem. The wind blows almost daily from the southwest from February to end of April and today was no exception to that rule.

Norma was still setting at the kitchen table looking out an east facing window and I was in the process of getting ready to go to work. It gets light about 7:15 and it it was just getting light enough to see a few hundred yards across what by mid summer would be a cotton field.

Her urgent call who are all of those men in the cotton field, caused me to hurry into kitchen, leaning over her shoulder, straining my eyes, looking out of the window, I saw no one. Knowing a wrong response to her concerns could cause me endless pain, I cautiously ask did you see where they went? Nearly taking my head off, she informed me, look again, there must be 10 or 15 of them lined up walking across the cotton field. Looking again, I made a run for the back door as I told her, get your glasses, your looking at the clothes pins on the clothe line. copyright © 2008
