Air Conditioners destroy families! In the days when no one could afford to buy or operate AC units, family, friends and neighbors set on the porch talking! I can't imagine what they talked about every evening. This was all in an attempt to escape heat in the house. Granny Elkins cooked on a wood stove so even with every window open inside the house was like being in an oven. Grin.

Unless you were very poor, everyone from grandpa to adult children had a chair or at least a bench or stool, usually hand made by grandpa, to set on and a certain place on porch for that chair, bench or stool. Smalled children generally were not allowed to 'hang out' with adults. "Children are to be seen not heard"!

You would think adults were not interested or listening, but, say a dirty word and at best you got a server scolding or at worst a mouth full of lie soap. All the kids in our neighbor hood played, many times in empty streets, games like hide and seek, kick the can or tag your it. Games ended and everyone went home when it got to dark to see other kids. That was about 8:30 or 9 PM, we didn't have street lights where I lived, they came much later.

Air Conditioners destroyed all this, now no one wants to leave the house because it's 'to hot' outside!!

I think I would have liked that better (maybe not so much the heat). My papa used to tell me great stories about when he was a kid. I still think of those stories and how interesting things were.
