Rip Van Winkle Effect Or A Sign Of Our Times!

Sometimes I feel like Rip Van Winkle. I wake up and the world has changed 'again'.
It's 3AM & raining hard. As I drive down the street I can see many sprinkler systems happily spraying the rain soaked landscape.

When did doctors and lawyers office landscaping become more important than growing food and fiber?
When did people stop growing fresh healthy food in home gardens? I guess it was about the time they stopped canning food from the garden and stopped making jelly and jam.
Why do we waste thousands of gallons of water a day washing our cars but won't use 1 gallon to water a plant that will feed our children?
Why do we happily pay 4 or 5 dollars a gallon for bottled water? Yet complain about bitterly about $3.50 a gallon gas?
Why do people stand in line to pay 6 dollars for a 50 cent cup of coffee?
Why do we drive 20 miles one way to the mall, burning $7.00 worth of gas to meet our next door neighbor for a cup of coffee and cookie?

It seems that I woke up and don't like what I see all around me. I think I will go back to sleep now. © 2008

You're so right. My son's school grows a tomato in a pot and they all act like it's a foreign object. When I was a kid I use to snack directly out of the garden. It was the best and I felt like I was getting away with something. Kids don't like veggies because they've never tasted them right out of the patch. I use to eat tomatoes, beans, and kohlrabi as fast as it would grow!
